This week we:
ELAL: we spent time exploring current events by reading kids news on CBC. We read this article about Jupiter's moon, which sparked many questions.
We worked through our literacy stations. Our reading comprehension task this week was about Michael Jordan, and we explored acrostic poems too.
Math: We continued working on algebra. Listen & draw is a common favourite part of the math class; this week we had questions about Mrs. Docherty's visit to starbucks and Mrs. Brinson's visit to staples.
We also worked through our math stations, and introduced a new task card algebra station.
Social Studies: We continued to learn about the stories that make up Canadian history. We learned about the vikings that came to Newfoundland, the first Europeans to touch Canadian land. We learned that they did not use the indigenous people as resourceful knowledge, and so they did not succeed in colonizing the land...the winter was too harsh and they did not know how to survive.
We also completed some reading and discussion to learn how the inuit survived in the arctic region of Canada. We read about their daily lives, and the types of food they ate. We connected these idas to the resources of the land! We used this information to create diary entries speaking as an inuk individual.
Health: We worked on stress management this week. We talked about what clues we can use from our bodies to identify stress, and we talked about some techniques to calm stress. We answered some thoughtful questions based around these ideas and had great discussions on personal experiences of dealing with stress. The kids were able to decorate their page to visually represent their answers.
Phys. Ed: the kids worked through different mat games. The kids worked on tactic and strategies throughout the week to help them succeed in the games.
Music: This week the students got to explore drumming with Ms. White!
Field Study Friday: We went outside to enjoy the lovely sun and the wonderful land we learn on! We had to fill an alphabet chart with things seen around the school yard. The challenge was to try to use alliteration to get extra points! Ex. Sparkly, soft snow for 3 points!!
Then we came into the classroom and categorized our words into syllables, long vowel sounds and prefixes/suffixes.
