Happy Friday!  We had an exciting day today.  We did some self exploration on the Perseverance rover. You can continue to explore the rovers here  We did some pumpkin math today; we learned about the equatorial circumference and the polar circumference.  For field study we went outside and played a game based on animal adaptations. We got to learn this game with all of the grade 5 students. Taya taught us a wonderful mindful art technique!

"It is a beautiful day to go to school! Some kids helped the Kindergartens with their in-line skating" - Lucas Wu "We had 7-minutes of writing and in Phys. Ed we did cone flipping and silent ball. I got hit twice in the face." Andy Dao "Then we went to the prairie to do some pumpkin activities It included writing and rt. For the first 15 minutes we drew with pastels, and the last 10 minutes we wrote with description. My pumpkin was weird." - Bassem Elmoghazy "For math we started with basic facts. After basic facts we started decimals ad watched Math Antics. It was pretty fun!" - Ahyan Khan "We continued our food chain notes, and we started our food web learning.  We had another day of Phys. Ed in the classroom. We played throwing and catching game with dice! We also played silent ball!  In ELAL we started writing our folktales. We chose our favourite story beginning and then introduced one of our extra characters. We went to Makerspace with Mrs. Barnden's class today where we built space related things. Some kids build rovers, some build solar systems and some build rocket ships!  We have been using Headspace this week for daily mindful meditation. It is a great way to relax and unwind.  In math we played place value Bingo! We had to listen for numbers in the millions, and then read numbers back. It was a lot of fun. In Science we discussed more about food chains. We learned some new vocabulary words; producer, consumer, decomposer, herbivore, omnivore and carnivore. We started reading A Rover's Story! Ask me about it!!

We learned the difference between assets and liabilities.  We introduced our next read aloud; A Rover's Story. We didn't crack it open yet, but we explored some information on the NASA website about the rovers that have been sent to Mars.

We created a poem or a rhythm for our tales." - Ahyan Khan  "We did basic facts and we added a new worksheet. It is harder. In placevalue we did the dice game and we rounded numbers." - Parth Patel  "In Science we saw how wetlands help us, and more plants! We learned about food chains. Just a reminder that NLS Spirit Wear orders (hoodies and t-shirts) are due by this Saturday. Please click  HERE  for the reminder news story that has all the information you need to order and pay. Vocabulary Words: Navigate & astounding  During 7 minutes of writing, the students were challenged with trying to incorporate one or both of thee words.  In phys. Ed we played Guardians of the Castle. "We try to take the flags while the other guardians try to take you out," Lucas explains. We started planning our creation stories that are inspired by the folktales we read this week. The students researched a wetland animal based on physical adaptations. The story plans are quite interesting! In math we worked on rounding large numbers! Ask me to round 1 349 628 to the nearest _______.  After recess we went for a community walk with the grade 5 team! What a wonderful way to appreciate the beautiful weather!  I hope everyone has a WONDERFUL long weekend!

"We finished the Math Inspectors today! It is good!" - Rhythm Ask us about the 4 corners game that we played in music today!  We listened to another creation story about the raven today. This had some similarities to the other creation stories that we have listened to so far in ELAL.  For Environmental Week we were able to head outside for some nature-inspired art. We got to make some beautiful collages of leaf rubbings.  In Makerspace our task was to create something that helps the environment. There were recycling sorters, machines that picked up dog poop, and garbage suckers!    We played some fun math activities today to practice reading, and organizing 6-digit numbers, but the challenge was we were not allowed to speak! Then we tried again, but we taped unknown numbers on our back and we had to ask questions to understand our number.    In science we focused on adaptations of Wetland species such as the water strider, damselfly, frog, and ma...

Ed in the classroom and we plyed a game where we threw a beanbag and tried to get it on a polyspot. We also did the evolution game.  We did more literacy stations like Epic, literacy games, and we even got choice time!  We read a story about a bunny that had a big fuffy tail and then it had a special song to make it snow. The snow fell so deep. He eventually lost his tail!  We played a math game using a smartboard dice. The goal was to get the highest number. We used 6 digit numbers. Finally in Science we learned about beavers!  "Today was an amazing day!" - Ahyan

Tomorrow is Nature Day: dress up like you are ready to explore nature, or like you ARE nature.  Today was our first day of a new schedule. Our recess is now in the afternoon, which is a great break in the day.  We started off the day by talking about environmental week. We watched a Ted Ed on plastic waste, and we listened to a story about all the beautiful wild parts of earth.  We wrapped up our coordinates unit in math today. We can now move points and shapes within a quadrant using directional words with accuracy!  In social we read a book called A is for Aboriginal, which gave voice to the indigenous views that were missing from the previous book we read.

Environmental Week: As a school we are trying to cut back on the garbage that we produce. We talked about how bringing "litterless lunches" is a great place to start! Please do your best to pack lunches with less garbage.  Mr. Newton took us outside for PE to play a game called Team Flag Grab. Ask me about a strategy we used during this game.  We completed a survey as a class about our school. Ask me what some of the questions were about. After snack we went outside for Field Study Friday. To go along with the OurSchool survey, we took our sit-upons to the front of the building and worked on sketching the school. There are some amazing architects in our class!!!  We are nearing the end of the Math Inspectors! We learned some new information about the Claymore Diamond! Mr. Franklin might not be a victim!  We wrapped up our day by working on items that needed finishing up. Ask me what I finished up during catch-up today.

LITTERLESS LUNCH CHALLENGE:  Next week we are trying to do a school-wide challenge to pack litterless lunches!  Today we explored more parachute games in PE. Ask me what activities we played. We worked more on spelling rules for past tense words.  In math we continued with our final plotting challenge. Ask me about my picture!  In music we got to use boom whackers and drums! In science we learned the word ADAPTATION. We learned that there are physical and behavioural adaptations. Ask me what the differences are.

PLEASE REMEMBER: Dress for the weather. Generally, we plan to be outside even in the rain, so please dress appropriately.   This morning we played with the parachute in Phys. Ed today. We played Cat and Mouse, Popcorn ball. We tried to pop the balls out of the parachute and then a version where we tried to pop the ball into the middle of the parachute.  In ELAL we completed 7 minutes of writing. We wrote about anything we wanted for 7 minutes, for example someone wrote a poem, and others used the photo for inspiration. Today the photos were a cat with mice on it, and an elephant being walked.  In math we started creating our own mystery pictures using our knowledge that we have learned in geometry so far.  We went to Makerspace to grow our creative minds! As an example, Joshua made a board game. Some others made towers and wetlands.  We explored the spelling pattern for past tense words ending in -ed. We realized that if a word ends in an "unvoiced" letter,...
